Cambridge, Ont., Canada, Sept. 24, 2018 — UTComp continues to break new ground as a leader in composite engineering and ultrasonic testing of composite materials, announcing that the company has been granted a U.S. patent for UltraAnalytix® reliability testing of fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP) and composites used to make tanks, pipes and other industrial infrastructure.
United States Patent Number 9,989,502, titled “System and Method for Analysis of Fibre Reinforced Composites,” was issued June 5, 2018. The patent represents a major milestone in the evolution of the Cambridge, Ont.-based engineering firm.
“We’re proud that the Patent Office has recognized the game-changing innovation that UltraAnalytix® represents for companies large and small in a wide range of industries,” said Jo Anne Watton, UTComp Chief Executive Officer.
Company founder and Chief Technology Officer Geoff Clarkson developed UltraAnalytix® as a safe, reliable and non-destructive alternative for evaluation of FRP that gives end users valuable information about the structural integrity and estimated lifespan of FRP tanks, pipes and other industrial assets.
“UltraAnalytix® has passed rigorous scientific testing, unlike any other method used to inspect FRP,” said Clarkson, who first began working on the technology in 2006 after identifying a consistent gap in FRP reliability testing during his work as a systems design engineer for industrial clients around the globe.
The UltraAnalytix® system and method uses data collected in the field with customized ultrasonic equipment, which is then analyzed using a proprietary algorithm. It has several key advantages over other methods for inspecting and analyzing FRP:
- It is non-destructive. With no need to cut holes or pieces out of tanks or pipes, structural integrity is preserved.
- It is non-intrusive. Data can be collected from an external surface while tanks and pipes are in operation, limiting downtime.
- It costs significantly less — and is much safer — than traditional internal inspection methods because no entry into confined spaces is required.
